In the late nineties when I was DJ and fooling around with music generally I decided to I had to start making music. Some people are called to be music makers, some receive some inspiration that makes it impossible to do anything else. I was more like the fat kid that decides to become a cook.
I remember when I knew I had to make some music. I was lying on the floor of a small dark house off Mill Road in Cambridge listening to a Miles Davis album. It resonated, full of colour and emotion. Rich. At the end of the side, needle still furring round the inner stop, I felt that if I didn't start making some music I would explode. I don't mean the live and susurrating music of imagination, but that I was FULL and if I didn't start to create I'd find music dead inside me. Like a pooled stream with no outlet, it would stagnate inside me, leaving only the viscid stink that accompanies the frustrated muso and aging rock journalists.
Also, don't forget, this was the peaking era of dance music, it was an exciting time, full of colour and possibility. At the time I wanted to contribute to what was going on. I didn't know what was going on, but I wanted in.
I have several on-going projects, the most visible of which is the minimal house label Beiak I am running with bad influence and excellent DJ, Largo. Some of our recent collaborations and the label releases can be found there.
